COMMUNITY SAFETY

Magherafelt Area Partnership is the Community Safety Partnership in Magherafelt. The Partnership is made up of representatives from various statutory and voluntary agencies, local councillors, and community representatives. With the formation of the community safety operational tier the following projects have been developed.

Rural House Numbering Project

This project encouraged rural residents to display their house numbers in order that the emergency services can find the correct property quicker.

Creative Arts Youth Diversionary Project

The aim of this project is to encourage more youth to attend existing youth clubs by providing an enhanced project that will provide them with sports coaching, beauty classes, film and animation. £80,000 has already been secured for this project from Magherafelt Area Partnership.

Drive for Life

£20,000 was been secured from the CSU to encourage disaffected youth to become more involved in their community through the provision of driving lessons and community work.

CCTV

Magherafelt currently has nine CCTV cameras in operation with their own monitoring room that is monitored 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The council provides 100% of the running costs.

Radio Link

Radio Link empowers Retailers and Entertainment Premises in addressing crimes that affect them through the use of a co-ordinated communications network. This system works in partnership with the CCTV system and the PSNI.

Small Grants

The CSP funded twelve small grants ranging from security lights for elderly homes, to funding a youth football league as part of a youth diversion program.

Youth Drama

Engaged all years eights at eight post primary schools in looking at the problems of criminal damage through the use of role-play and drama. A theatre company was engaged as part of this project and it was the first of its type in Northern Ireland.

Retailers Rights Leaflet

This leaflet informs retailers and their employees of their rights and course of actions for dealing with shoplifters.

The Partnership has just completed their strategy after extensive consultation in the district. The Partnership will be launching this strategy during Community Safety Week. The major priorities identified through this consultation were;

  • Offences against individuals, particularly domestic violence and sexual assault
  • Drug, substance and alcohol abuse
  • Anti-social behaviour and low level neighbourhood disorder
  • Fear of crime amongst older people, vulnerable adults, victims and children

The CSP is in the process of developing an action plan to address these priorities. This will be published in the autumn.
